What’s your favourite way to use your sofa? Are you unwinding with a Netflix binge, nestled with a good book, or perhaps exploring something a little more… adventurous?
With over 2,300 monthly Google searches for “how to spice up a sex life”, it’s clear that people are eager to break from their routines, with sofas proving the perfect opportunity for sexual exploration.
In partnership with an award-winning sex expert, we set out to discover the reality of how people are really using their sofas, surveying Brits to get the dirt on all things sofa sex. The results? Let’s just say the British public is swapping out their bedrooms for more spontaneous settings, embracing the throws of passion right in their living rooms.
New s-experiences: Brits can't get enough of freaking on their futons
It turns out that a huge 97% of Brits have had sex on their sofas, with nearly half (49%) pining for a new s-experience, while others simply enjoy the relaxed and casual environment of the living room. Interestingly, 1 in 5 admitted they like to keep the TV on during sofa sex (we can only hope it’s to set the mood rather than catch up on the latest episode of Come Dine With Me…).
When analysing gender differences, men's and women’s views on sofa sex differ slightly. Men (29%) are more enthusiastic about the chance for experimentation and variety compared to women (21%). On the other hand, women (21%) are more likely to report feeling intimate and emotionally connected during sofa sex than men (18%). Despite these distinctions, men seem slightly more at ease, with 26% of men versus 24% of women admitting they feel more comfortable having sex on the sofa than in any other location (even their beds!)
When it got to talking about positions, we learnt that Brits were all about doggy style, which was shown to be a clear favourite in over half (55%) of those surveyed. Men in particular (63%) vouch for the benefits of doggy style when in the mood for sofa sex. Brits also love the classics, with missionary close behind at 48%, most loved by women (49%). Oral sex proves popular as well, with 44% ranking it as a top choice for sofa intimacy.
Let's talk turn-offs: the downsides of sofa sex
Sofas weren’t exactly designed with sexy time in mind (...watch this space), and couch canoodling can come with its own set of challenges, but what do the majority of Brits think?
Participants of our survey (42%) noted their couch’s limited range of movement was the major drawback of sofa sex, which was a key concern for men in particular. 4 in 10 Brits also expressed an issue with the lack of privacy in the living room compared to the bedroom, with women most commonly noting this as problematic (42%).
The risk of being heard (36%), difficulty cleaning due to potential “mishaps” (32%) and hygiene (30%) also ranked highly as dampeners on sofa sex.
So, what do the s-experts say?
We worked with award-winning sex and relationship coach, Gemma Nice, to find out the true pros and cons of sofa sex.
Spontaneous intimacy
“Having sex on the sofa often adds a touch of spontaneity that keeps the excitement alive,” Gemma told us. “It creates a more intimate setting where couples can engage in dirty talk or foreplay before moving things to the bedroom. Plus, the presence of a TV in the living room can set the mood, with a film or show potentially instigating forms of arousal that might lead to sexier moments.”
Gemma explained further, "Sex in the bedroom, especially at night, often involves a routine — brushing teeth, locking doors, maybe doing a quick clean. In contrast, sofa sex allows for spontaneous intimacy without the need for preparation or waiting around. It’s an opportunity to dive right into the moment.”
A more fulfilling penetrative experience
Gemma also explained that sofa sex can be more physically fulfilling, as well as emotionally. “The seated position and the slight tilt of the pelvis can be perfect for masturbation or hand stimulation,” she told us. “Additionally, the sofa's arms provide a convenient angle for oral sex, while pillows or cushions can be strategically placed under the pelvis to facilitate deeper, more fulfilling penetrative experiences."
It can get a little messy
However, Gemma explained that sofa sex isn’t all perks. As we know, sex isn’t always the cleanest and dryest of activities… “The cons of sofa sex is that when you ejaculate, it can get a little messy. It's best to have a splash blanket or some towels down to be on the safe side or at least have some kitchen roll or tissue next to you,” Gemma advised. “Towels and blankets can also help keep your skin protected from potential skin burn, especially if your sofa is made from harsh material or leather.”
Introducing the ultimate 'Love Seat'
Britain’s love of sofa sex got us thinking, what if we could design the ultimate sofa s-experience? Of course, it was only fitting that we researched what Brits are looking for from their perfect ‘love seat’.
Our survey showed that over half (58%) of Brits wanted stain-resistant, easy-to-clean fabric on their ideal sex sofa, along with a deep seat to ensure comfort for two people to lie down. Durability (46%) and a soft fabric cover (45%) were also highly favoured features.
Britain, we took your ideas on board. Please allow us to introduce ‘Love Seat’ – the couch that reimagines sofa sex.
The ‘Love Seat’ is designed with ultra-soft fabric and a waterproof, stain-resistant coating, because we heard you, and we understand that good sex involves more than just dry humping. Our new sofa also features deep seating to allow a couple to lie (amongst other things) more comfortably, and the sturdy construction guarantees lasting durability. We’ve also opted for removable cushions for ease with cleanliness, and adjustable headrests to enable comfort in all your favourite positions. The ‘Love Seat’ even includes hidden, built-in storage, so you can hide away all your favourite toys for safekeeping.

Packed with expert-approved sex positions, tips, and advice, this guide is your go-to resource for great sofa sex, whoever you are, whenever you want it.
The love-seated: “This is a great position to try while seated, as both partners face each other. One person sits cross-legged on the sofa, while the other straddles them, wrapping their legs around their partner’s waist. This position means that the person on top has more control over the depth and rhythm of hip movements, allowing for comfort and pleasure for both partners."
The recline and ride: “One partner lies down while the other positions themselves on top, with their hands resting on the arm of the sofa for support. The person on the bottom shifts their pelvis towards the edge of the sofa, allowing for deeper penetration. The partner on top can use their hands to control the movement, creating a rocking motion for added pleasure and intensity.”
The tease spoon: “Both partners lie in a spooning position on the sofa, but one person rests their leg on the arm of the sofa. This position allows for deeper penetration, along with a resting place for your leg, which can help to maintain comfort and stamina and keep the moment going for longer.”
The reverse couch girl: “In this position, one partner sits on the sofa while the other sits on their lap, facing away. The person on top has full control of the movements, making it perfect for building anticipation. It’s also ideal for foreplay, as both hands are free to explore and stimulate each other’s bodies, heightening arousal. This position works especially well if you're watching an adult movie to set the mood.”
The seat me out: “This position is perfect for oral sex. One person lies back on the sofa while the other kneels in front, leaning down to provide oral pleasure. Swapping roles can really add to the fun."
The hit the seat spot: “This position is a variation of doggy style, with one person on all fours, facing the back of the sofa (depending on its size), while the other stands on the floor behind them. This is a great choice for those wanting a deeper penetrative experience.”
When it comes to Sofa Sutra, the key is to embrace fun, explore new experiences, and find undiscovered pleasures in a safe and consensual environment. So get creative, make the most out of your sofa, and of course, let us know if our Sofa Sutra has paved the way for your newest kind of happy endings.
