Sofa colours – which shades are trending for 2022?

Sofa colours – which shades are trending for 2022?

Worship the trends?

Us too.

Whether the latest fad is glam, minimalist, shabby chic, au naturel – whatever. We get it. You’re the kind of person who wants that Instagram ‘it’ home. And we say, amen to that.

Perhaps you’re moving into your first property and want to pick an on-point palette for the décor? Or maybe you’re just a sucker for fast fashion and like to regularly refresh your living room? Either way, there’s one word that you need to know right now…

Neutral.

Classy, subtle shades are leading the way at the mo. Here at Sofa Club, we’ve crunched the numbers, and these are the top 5 most-searched-for sofa colours of the year (so far).

Top 5 sofa colours of the year

1. Grey

Average monthly searches – 21,900

No surprise here. The old favourite is still on top.  Will a grey sofa ever go out of fashion? We don’t think so. It’s officially the most sought-after sofa colour.

Whether you opt for a light linen or rich velvet, if it’s grey, it’s on trend.

Understated, chic and infinitely versatile. It’s the perfect base shade, which can be adapted to any home and introduced to different accent colours through the seasons. Why not pair with ochre scatter cushions for the summer? Or navy throws in the winter? It’s up to you. With a shade of grey, you can change things up as much as you like.

2. Green

Average monthly searches – 12,100 searches

Green is a big deal at the moment – both in fashion and interiors.

Its rise in popularity is due to the biophilic design trend of late (i.e. people’s desire to bring the outside in and create a sense of harmony between their home and nature).

We’re not talking jewel tones of green. Instead, the trends are favouring lighter and more gentle shades, such as sage and olive. To nail the look, simply pair your green sofa with white-panelled walls, washed wooden flooring and an abundance of house plants. Real or fake – we don’t judge.

3. Pink

Average monthly searches – 8,500

Reckon pink is confined to a girl’s bedroom? Not anymore.

Ask any millennial and they’ll tell you this once feminine shade is, in fact, neutral – a sophisticated choice for grown-up spaces. Which may be why it ranks as one of this year’s hottest sofa colours.

No need to channel your inner Barbie, though. This trend isn’t about bubblegum pink sofas. Think chalky shades of rose and blush in textured wools and velvet. Or, for a toned-down alternative, opt for a white or light grey sofa instead and pair it with dusty pink accessories.

4. Cream

Average monthly searches – 8,400

Nipping at the heels of pink; cream has secured its place as one of the most in-demand sofa colours of the last 6 months. Admittedly, it may not be a hit with pet owners and parents. But for anyone looking to follow the ‘neutral’ trend, this is the ultimate neutral.

It creates the perfect backdrop. A base from which you can build.

Embrace the creaminess with matching scatter cushions and pair the sofa with similar tones of beige, tan, white and brown throughout your lounge. Or, slide it up against an eye-catching feature wall, in steel or Prussian blue, and finish the look with wicker furnishings and pampas grass.

5. Blue

Average monthly searches – 8200

Another sofa colour that’s been recently re-assigned as neutral.

So much so, it’s now dubbed ‘bluetral’.

Blue is a calming and versatile tone that effortlessly blends into its surroundings. Meaning, it kind of functions like cream – creating the perfect starting point for an understated and classy look, and a forgiving base for a long list of accent shades.

One of the most popular combos is blue and grey.

Go all in and push a deep navy velvet couch against a grey panelled wall. Or, for a more subtle take on the trend, opt for a steely grey sofa and combine it with country blue accessories.

Sofa Club recommendation: The Sloane in ‘Shades of Grey’.

6. Black

Average monthly searches – 6,900

Black has just about managed to sneak its way into the top 5.

Surprised?

It’s certainly a bold choice and one that can be tricky to pull off. But the key is to opt for a soft-touch fabric and go one way or the other with the rest of your décor. You could contrast the moodiness with paper white walls and cool grey. Or embrace it and team your black sofa with reddish wood furniture, antiquated floor lamps and textiles in burgundy and grey.

Either way, this is a sexy look that truly makes a statement.

7. White

Average monthly searches – 4700

White sofa? That’s asking for trouble.

However, we completely get why almost 5000 trend-led individuals are searching the web for a crisp white sofa – every single month.

They’re pure class.

Designed to make a statement, pristine white couches look like they could have been lifted from the pages of a glossy magazine – or straight off the runway. Look, but try not to touch. Muddy paws and sticky fingers are certainly not permitted.

This non-colour invites a minimalistic design scheme.

Keep things chic with whitewashed wood, brushed gold detailing and black accents. Or use it as a blank canvas and pile on the pastel shade cushions and throws.

Sofa Club recommendation: Runway 201 in ‘Iced Latte’.
