Cleaning a fabric sofa
At Sofa Club, we believe nothing compares to the super cosy comfort of a fabric sofa

At Sofa Club, we believe nothing compares to the super cosy comfort of a fabric sofa. That amazing feeling, of sinking into the soft textured cushions after a long day, is simply unbeatable. But unfortunately, they do get a bad rep for being difficult to maintain.

Most people worry about the ‘cleanability' of a fabric sofa. After all, no matter how careful you try to be, accidents happen. And unless you're a fan of the shiny plastic look – à la Dexter – crumbs, spillages and stains are inevitable. But the truth is, they're really easy to look after.

Forget about forbidding food and drink on the couch or banning the dog.

Snuggle up with pooch. Slouch with your supper after work. Sip your vino whilst lounging with reckless abandon. It doesn't matter. Using our expert tips, you can clean your fabric sofa and keep it looking as good as new – with no rules and minimal effort required.

What's the easiest way to clean your sofa?

Ultimately, the best method for cleaning your sofa will depend on its style and the fabric from which it's made. Different textiles react differently to particular cleaning solutions. So before you start channelling Mrs Hinch and grab the white vinegar, our #1 piece of advice is to check the label.

Whether you're attempting to tackle a specific cushion stain or want to give the couch a full refresh, this will tell you the best (and safest) way to spruce up the sofa fabric.

Not au fait with sofa cleaning codes and symbols? Don't worry, they're pretty simple.

Instructions on how to clean a fabric sofa

The tag can usually be found on the base of the couch or underneath the cushions. But if you're struggling to locate its whereabouts, get in touch with the manufacturer. It's better to be safe than sorry. Ruining your dream sofa with a poorly chosen spray is enough to make anyone cry.

5 tips to keep your sofa fresh

Chenille. Linen. Velvet. Microfibre. Regardless of what specific fabric your sofa is made from, there are a few ‘universal' techniques – that are super easy – to keep it looking its best.

1. Tackle stains ASAP

This is the golden rule. Muddy paws? The kids' sticky fingers? Red wine spillages on a Saturday night? If you want to avoid disaster, deal with them immediately. The longer you wait, the harder stains are to remove. So grab a sponge ASAP and dab it gently to soak up the damage.

2. Vacuum weekly

Sofas are a dumping ground for crumbs, pet hairs, dust and general day-to-day dirt and grime. So when you're doing the weekly housework, be sure to run the hoover over your fabric furniture. If you have one, use an upholstery attachment and cover every inch of upholstery.

It'll only add a few minutes to your rota, but it'll make a big difference.

3. Bake it

Unfortunately, fabric fibres tend to cling to bad smells. Whether it's the unmistakable whiff of Doggo or last week's chilli lingering in the air, there's an easy way to shake off the stench. Baking soda! Simply sprinkle it over the surface of the couch and leave it to sit for 20-30 minutes. Then, once the time is up, use the vacuum to clean up the mess and inhale the super freshness.

4. Always do a spot test

Before you spray (and potentially ruin) the entire sofa with the latest cleaning solution from Tesco, always do a test. Even if you're using the manufacturer's recommended product, you can't be too careful. Follow the instructions and simply apply a small amount in a discreet area.

Prevention is better than cure and all that. And it's the best way to avoid any discolouration.

5. Let it air dry

Trust us – attempting to quick-dry a 6 seater corner couch with your Dyson Supersonic is not a good idea. The best option is to let nature do its thing. Patience is a virtue, after all.

As hard as it may be, part ways with your sofa for one night and allow it to air-dry. Perhaps you could go out? Meet friends? Or just hit the hay super early. By morning, the fabric will be moisture-free and ready to be used once more – without the risk of a soggy bottom.
