Small Living Room? Big plans!

Small Living Room? Big plans!

Don’t be put off by a lack of space, beautiful design isn’t held back by mere floor size. Although it can be difficult to add new life to a look when you don’t have the space to spare, all is not lost- the interior design experts at the Sofa club have gathered some foolproof tricks they use when the room is small but the expectations aren’t!

If you’re short on space you’re probably short on budget too, but there’s no shame in having to make do. When buying furniture, don’t get too bogged down with what’s on trend right now. It’s better to invest in pieces that are practical and can serve you well in the long run. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should have to settle for something ugly. But, furniture can still be beautiful even if it's temporarily out of favour style wise, don't turn your nose up at something perfect for your space just because it's not quite inright now.

It’s also important to remember not to get too carried away with the furniture you put in a space, there needs to be a certain amount of clear spare to balance used space out- otherwise the area will end up looking cluttered and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, this applies no matter the size of your room, so, for a small room, it’s best to stick to smaller items of furniture or to keep the buying to just the bare necessities.

Neutral and light colours are a great way to keep small spaces feeling good. White and other bright colours can make walls seem further away and make the same small space seem larger. Avoid black or dark colours, especially in large areas or on walls, as these can shrink an already cramped area and make it feel even more unwelcoming. This doesn’t mean your room has to be boring, patterns are a great way to add a little bit of pizzazz to bland base colours without having the same effect on the feeling of a room.
