Beautifully cool and definitely in style right now is a twist on the classic farmhouse aesthetic. This rustic and happy natural look isn't going anywhere soon, so, if you're a fan of simple decor but still want that homely feel- look no further than the modern farmhouse style. Does it need to be said that wood is a central part of this vibe? Get as much wood into the room as possible, beams, floors, ceiling covers, wall panelling, shelves, drawers and even chairs and tables. The more distressed looking the wood, the better. If you can't quite afford premium vintage wood, why not have a go yourself? Squeeze a little bit of lemon onto the outside surface and rub along the wood with sandpaper; don't be afraid to give it a little knock every now and again- you can even add and remove nails for an extra layer. If getting rough isn't your style, you can find driftwood yourself along the seaside and there's also particular varnishes that can give the effect of distressed wood.
This look also depends on soft furnishings, use brown and neutral colours as a base throughout- but don't skimp on soft textures on sofas, cushions and rugs. The warmth of such things can make all the difference. You can keep and use metals, but try and keep them industrial looking and avoid shiny ultra modern lights. Hanging lights, however, are a great way to make sure rooms get lots of light, making them look larger and more welcoming- especially during the winter cold.
