It is no secret that tidier homes look and feel better, but when you’re faced with a large amount of work to get there, the thought can often be stressful. Despite this, taking the time to improve your living environment is always beneficial, if not for your health and wellbeing, at least for the tidiness of your home. So here’s how to declutter your home in 3 easy and simple steps…
Recognise What You Do And Don’t Need
This step is the easiest and also the hardest. It’s difficult for many of us to let go of things we like, but ultimately don’t need. If you see something that you know you can live without but still really want to keep, ask yourself this question. “If I was buying this today, how much would I be willing to pay for it?” This mindful trick will help you recognise how valuable you truly find everything in your home and then declutter accordingly.
Try the Wardrobe Hanger Experiment
Oprah Winfrey was the lady to help give this experiment notoriety. To identify wardrobe pieces to clear out, hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to your wardrobe with the hanger facing the correct direction. After six months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you can easily discard. This experiment could also be applied to a number of clutter areas in your home (toys, linens, tools, hobbies and craft items).
Take the 12-12-12 Challenge
A simple task of locating 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to be returned to their proper home can be a really fun and exciting way to quickly organise 36 things in your house. By doing this, you are instantly reducing clutter by getting rid of the things that aren’t being used in the present and donating to a home that might need them more.
